Absentee Ballot says: Barack Osama?

From my local news station CBS 6 WRGB:

Ballot blunder: Barack ‘Osama’ on Rensselaer county ballots

Talk about a mix-up — in Rensselaer County hundreds of absentee ballots mailed out this week to voters have Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s last name spelled “Osama”.

Election officials on both sides of the aisle say the misspelling was simply a typo.

The absentee ballots were mailed out to about three hundred people.

And another local news station just published their story NBC WNYT Channel 13:
Barack Osama? Hundreds of absentee ballots go out with wrong name.
Barack Osama?

That’s the name that appears on the ballot mailed out to hundreds of voters in Rensselaer County.

The ballots in question are absentee ballots. The board of elections calls it simply, a typo.

If it is a typo, it’s a dozy. “B” and “S” are not very close to each other on the standard keyboard.

The error also plays into a theme that is going through this presidential campaign-questioning Obama’s religion and ethnic background.

So let’s try to clear up the confusion. The Democrat running for President is Barack Obama. Not to be confused with anyone named Osama like that guy who supposedly has been Masterminding Al-Queda from a cave in Afghanistan for the last seven years.

They’re still pretty confused about all this in Rensselaer County, where the theoretically bi-partisan Board of Elections managed to print and distribute at least 300 absentee ballots listing the Presidential candidate as Barack Osama.

Democratic Party Chairman Tom Wade isn’t very happy about the error although he doesn’t think it’s going to do much permanent damage. On this last day of voter registration, at a time when the operation of their office is clearly in question, neither the Democratic Commissioner Ed McDonough nor the Republican Larry Bugbee was willing to face our camera and answer questions about the screw-up. Instead leaving a brief statement calling it a typographical error that was not deliberate and claiming they will continue to fairly manage the upcoming General Election.

Because the commissioners ducked our reporting, we can’t tell you what they’ve done to make sure that the erroneous ballots aren’t voted and that all of the bad ones are recalled.

Their statement doesn’t say anything about that.
